Dr. Carol Clark
The Intersection of Gender Identity and Sexuality
Did you know?
- Our gender identity, who we feel we are as a man or woman, is not so absolute
- For some individuals, the gender they know in their brain does not match their physiology
- When a transgender person feels heard and understood, they may say “You saved my life”
Carol Clark, Ph.D., LMHC, has worked with the Transgender Community since 1991, when she sat with a transgender panel in her first Human Sexuality class. She went on to specialize with this community in her private practice and facilitates a support group in Ft. Lauderdale. As she began getting calls and emails from trans people around the U.S. and other countries, she realized the significant need for more fully trained therapists and created the International Transgender Certification Association (ITCA), which is both a stand-alone program and also a specialization under the International Institute of Clinical Sexology Ph.D. program. Thanks to webinar capability, Dr. Clark and the other ITCA instructors have trained many therapists to work in this underserved area. On a completely different note, stemming from her work as a sex and addictions therapist, Dr. Clark is the author of Addict America: The Lost Connection, a must-read for everyone who wants to live a more present and Connected life.
As an Adjunct Professor at Carlos Albizu University in Miami, Fl, Dr. Clark’s students were urging her to open a training program in sex therapy. She became a continuing education provider for the Florida Boards of psychology, nursing, clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling, and AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. Her Sex Therapy Training Institute now trains people around the country both in-person and with live webinars and the program has been approved to offer a Ph.D. in Clinical Sexology.
