An immigrant from South Africa in 1967, Derek Polonsky graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1970.  He completed a medical internship in New York at Mt Sinai Hospital and returned to the Beth Israel Hospital to complete his psychiatric residency.  Post residency he worked half time at Brookline Community Health Center and started a private practice. From 1980 - 1985 he headed a couples and sexual dysfunction clinic at TUFTS Medical Center.  Since that time he has been in private practice, treating individuals and couples.  He became interested in the new field of sexuality in the 1970s and has been a member of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research ever since.  He has written extensively on clinical issues of sexuality and has contributed chapters to several text books.  Dr. Polonsky has taught residents in psychiatry at TUFT Medical School and Harvard Medical School for the past 40 years.
